In short

The site has no accounts, no cookies, no analytics, no advertising and no contact form.

The vehicle checker keeps your last entries in your own browser so they are there next time. They are never sent to us.

The hosting server keeps access logs with shortened IP addresses for at most 14 days.

Who we are

Road Rulebook is an independent information website about driving and parking rules in Europe. It is not run by or connected to any government, authority or road operator. This page describes what personal data the website processes and why. It is information, not legal advice.

What stays in your browser

When you use the vehicle checker, your entries (country of registration, fuel, Euro class or year of first registration) are saved in the local storage of your own browser under the name rrb.vehicle.v1, so the checker shows your last result when you come back. The entries never leave your device and we never see them. You can delete them by clearing this site's data in your browser. The route checker saves nothing.

No cookies and no third parties

The site sets no cookies. Pages load no scripts, fonts, maps or images from other websites; everything comes from our own server. The site contains no advertising and no affiliate links.

Hosting and server access logs

The site is hosted by Hetzner Online GmbH on a server in Helsinki, Finland, in the European Union.

The server keeps access logs. A log entry records the time of a request, the page requested, the response status, the amount of data transferred and the technical details your browser sends with the request, such as its name and version (the user agent) and your preferred language. It records your IP address only in shortened form: the last part of an IPv4 address is removed (203.0.113.7 is stored as 203.0.113.0) and an IPv6 address is cut to its first three blocks (48 bits). Of the page you came from, it records only the address of the website, such as https://www.google.com, not the page itself. We use the logs to operate the site, to detect technical problems and misuse, and to count requests per page. Log entries are deleted after at most 14 days. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website and understanding how it is used (Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR).

Links to other websites

Every page links to official sources such as road operators, ministries and city councils. Those websites are run by others and have their own privacy policies. We are not responsible for their content or their data practices.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectify or erase your personal data, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. You can also complain to a data protection authority:
