Florence: ZTL, Scudo Verde and parking

Checked 3 Nov 2026

Cameras at every ZTL gate read the number plate of each car that enters Florence's historic centre, and a fine can reach an owner abroad almost a year later. Park outside the ZTL, or, if your hotel is inside it and has confirmed your room, drive straight there and have the hotel register your plate.

How to enter legally

  1. Staying at a hotel, guesthouse or B&B inside the ZTL? Make sure it has room for you, then drive the shortest route to it.
  2. Give the accommodation your number plate. It enters the plate in the city's online white list, which covers your entry in the 3 hours before the plate was entered; for the summer night ZTL, entering it by midnight of the following day is enough.
  3. Near the accommodation you may park for at most 30 minutes, in residents' spaces or where parking is allowed, with the accommodation's permit showing your arrival time.
  4. The white-list entry costs EUR 1 and covers vehicles under 3.5 t.

Commercial garages inside the ZTL work the same way: once the garage confirms it has a space, drive the shortest route there and the garage registers your plate (EUR 1).

A few routes inside the ZTL are open without a permit, for example from Viale F.lli Rosselli to Santa Maria Novella station and the car park beneath it, and through Piazza della Calza to the Oltrarno car park along the city walls.

Fines from abroad

Italian authorities have 90 days from establishing an offence to serve a fine that was not handed over on the spot, but 360 days when the owner lives abroad. A ZTL camera fine can therefore arrive almost a year after your trip.
